Amazon has hit its water positive target in India much earlier than its original 2027 deadline. It now restores more water to local communities than all the water it uses for its data centers, offices and delivery warehouses. India faces serious water shortages, holding just 4% of global fresh water while housing 18% of the world’s population, and Amazon plans to invest over $35 billion in the country by 2030 to develop digital infrastructure and AI. The brand follows a three-part water plan: cutting water waste, reusing treated wastewater and replenishing natural water sources. It uses water-saving tools, on-site sewage systems and rainwater collection tanks to recycle hundreds of millions liters of water each year for cleaning, irrigation and cooling. Besides, Amazon has put more than $6 million into local water conservation projects, which can add over 4 billion liters of clean water back to regional groundwater annually. The company’s sustainability chief stated this milestone proves its practical water management work delivers real long-term benefits for local Indian communities.
