Walmart Signs its First Long-term Nuclear Power Purchase Agreement

Retail giant Walmart signed its first nuclear power purchase deal with Constellation Energy. The two 15-year contracts starting in 2029 and 2030 let Walmart buy around 176 MW of zero-carbon nuclear power from an Illinois plant for its new local distribution center. This deal boosts output of existing nuclear units without building new power stations and adds clean electricity to the grid. It also supports long-term maintenance of the plant and over 1,100 local jobs. Walmart aims to cut emissions heavily by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040, yet it admitted in 2024 outside barriers like limited clean tech and energy infrastructure may stop it from hitting short-term climate targets.
