On September 3, Ko Wai-kin, a prisoner at Stanley Prison, pleaded guilty at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts to offering a $500,000 bribe to a public prosecutor from the Department of Justice (DoJ). The bribe was intended to interfere with his ongoing trial for a deception case. Magistrate Jeffrey Sze Cho-yiu has adjourned sentencing to September 19 to review the defendant’s background report, while Ko remains in custody. The case was reported to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) by the prosecutor and involves full cooperation from the DoJ and Correctional Services Department. The maximum penalty for this offense is seven years in prison and a $500,000 fine.
