On July 10, 2026, Brazilian meat giant JBS, the world’s largest beef and poultry producer, announced it would scrap its original target of achieving full value-chain net zero emissions by 2040 and remove Scope 3 supply chain emissions — which make up over 90% of its total greenhouse gas output — from its climate targets, retaining only Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission reduction targets that it can better control. The company admitted that inconsistent measurement standards among hundreds of thousands of scattered agricultural suppliers worldwide have created massive obstacles to supply chain decarbonization, while stakeholders including clients, investors and regulators now demand corporate sustainability targets to be measurable and actionable. JBS was previously sued by New York’s Attorney General for misleading environmental claims over its 2040 net zero pledge and settled the lawsuit for USD 1.1 million in 2025. Its revised climate targets include cutting Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity by 30% by 2030 and 70% by 2050 against a 2019 baseline, alongside reaching a 60% renewable electricity penetration rate globally by 2030.
