In a report dated 6 July 2026, coffee giant Starbucks stated in its 2025 Impact Report that it is actively reassessing its 2030 full-value-chain emissions reduction target, taking into account newly introduced regulations, updated relevant standards and various operational headwinds. The group rolled out its climate target back in 2020, aiming to halve its Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 based on 2019 levels. So far, its Scope 1 and 2 operational emissions have dropped by 17% from the 2019 baseline, while overall emissions intensity has fallen by 3%. However, Scope 3 emissions, which make up more than 90% of its total carbon footprint, have risen by 8%, pushing the group’s overall greenhouse gas emissions up 7% compared to the base year. Purchased goods, coffee cultivation and dairy products represent the major emission contributors. This review of climate targets forms part of CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy and is overseen by newly appointed Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer Kelly Goodejohn. The group has also integrated sustainability initiatives into each business division to reinforce accountability among senior management. The report outlines nine core sustainability objectives, including emissions cuts, 100% renewable electricity for all company-operated outlets, deforestation-free coffee and cocoa supply chains, eco-friendly packaging and water resource management. Starbucks noted that certain targets have been fulfilled, yet its complex global supply chain has created obstacles to delivering long-term transformation on other fronts. The company stressed that despite revisiting its emissions reduction target, it will keep working to curb greenhouse gas emissions across all operations and supply chains, and will transparently disclose relevant progress to the public.
