EU Commission Says Simplification of EUDR Deforestation Law will Cut Costs for Companies by 75%

On 4 May 2026,the European Commission finalized its simplification review of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), delivering a significant 75% reduction in projected annual compliance overhead. Estimated costs have plummeted from €8.1 billion to €2.0 billion, primarily driven by streamlined reporting frameworks for micro and small enterprises (SMEs) and expanded “low-risk” country classifications. While the regulation’s core mandate remains firm, a new draft delegated act introduces strategic scope adjustments—notably exempting leather imports while incorporating specific downstream coffee and palm oil derivatives. This review provides critical regulatory certainty for stakeholders following previous implementation delays. Large-cap entities must achieve compliance by year-end 2026, with smaller operators following in mid-2027.Beyond cost mitigation, the Commission also reports that the EUDR is already catalyzing capital investment in supply chain traceability and enhancing market transparency. Environmental groups, including the WWF, have welcomed the transition from political volatility to practical, enforceable implementation.
