The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Peace Corps have signed an MOU to strengthen their institutional ties and cooperate on strategic planning, training, and project implementation. Their partnership aims to address global environmental challenges at the local level by using evidence-based practice and traditional ecological knowledge. They will collaborate on several areas, including managing solid waste and wastewater, promoting improved cookstoves, building environmental institutions, managing coastal and natural resources, and preserving biodiversity. The MOU also creates career opportunities for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and former staff to join the EPA team. The agencies’ commitment to combatting climate change and environmental degradation in Africa was announced in December 2022 at the African and Diaspora Young Leaders Forum in Washington, D.C. Both agencies will work with local communities to protect the environment and support in-country volunteering initiatives.
