Global shipping leader A.P. Moller‑Maersk has struck a deal with London‑based Anemoi Marine Technologies for the world’s‑first Rotor Sail installation on a container vessel to boost ship efficiency and curb emissions. Founded in 2015, Anemoi’s wind‑powered Rotor Sail delivers auxiliary propulsion, cutting daily fuel use by roughly one ton and CO₂ emissions by around three tons per unit; the firm has previously rolled out this technology for bulk carriers yet never for container ships. Under the contract, Anemoi will engineer, produce and supply a 5‑metre‑diameter, 35‑metre fixed Rotor Sail for one of Maersk’s 8,700 TEU Lima‑class vessels. Scheduled for fitting in mid‑2027, the hardware will integrate with existing onboard systems and undergo real‑world piloting during regular North‑South Atlantic commercial voyages. Maersk’s Head of Fleet Technology Ole Graa Jakobsen views wind‑assisted propulsion as a promising maritime decarbonisation solution and sees this pilot as critical to building practical operational insights, while Anemoi CEO Clare Urmston highlights the value of cross‑industry collaboration to advance wind‑propulsion adoption across global shipping.
