Constellation Invests in Small Modular Reactor Startup Blue Energy

Constellation Technology Ventures, the venture capital arm of U.S. nuclear power firm Constellation Energy, has announced a strategic equity investment in modular nuclear power plant developer Blue Energy. This marks Constellation’s first investment in a U.S.-based small modular reactor (SMR) developer and will support the rollout of advanced nuclear technologies across the United States. Founded in 2023, Blue Energy delivers turnkey nuclear power plant solutions compatible with mainstream reactor technologies. Drawing on large-scale robotic prefabrication and assembly methods adopted from offshore oil, gas and LNG projects, the company tackles key hurdles facing the nuclear sector — project financing and slow deployment — aiming to deliver low-cost, zero-carbon baseload power competitive with fossil fuels and renewables. Blue Energy has secured a major licensing milestone from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Under its phased gas-to-nuclear deployment strategy, it targets power delivery within 48 months. The firm plans to launch preliminary site work for its first Texas project as early as this year, ahead of a projected final investment decision in 2027. Executives from both companies stated that the partnership will advance the scaled development of modular nuclear power by establishing predictable, rapidly scalable and project-financeable models to meet America’s surging electricity demand.
