EU Commission Warns 20 Member States Over Failure to Implement Anti-Greenwashing Rules

On 2nd June 2026,The European Commission initiated formal infringement procedures against 17 EU member states following their failure to transpose the “Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition” (ECGT) into national law. Initially adopted in 2024 to combat corporate greenwashing, this legislative framework strictly prohibits unsubstantiated environmental claims and deceptive sustainability labels. Consequently, non-compliant jurisdictions face stringent regulatory scrutiny, as the official transposition deadline expired on March 27, 2026.

From a risk management perspective, the directive imposes rigid compliance standards regarding product durability and commercial transparency. Although the regulatory mandate aims to protect consumers, it introduces near-term legal uncertainty for corporations operating across the non-compliant member states. Moving forward, the targeted 20 nations have a strict time frame to implement these legal adjustments in September. Failure to comply could trigger escalated legal actions from the Commission, ultimately resulting in severe financial penalties from the Court of Justice.
