Granting of stablecoin issuer licences

On 10th April 2026, The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has officially granted its inaugural stablecoin issuer licenses to Anchorpoint Financial Limited and HSBC, effective April 10, 2026. This landmark regulatory approval under the Stablecoins Ordinance signals a pivotal shift toward a regulated digital asset framework within the region. Both entities are expected to finalize operational preparations and commence formal issuance within the coming months.

According to HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue, the move establishes a robust, orderly environment that balances technological innovation with stringent risk management and consumer protection. By integrating regulated stablecoins into the mainstream financial infrastructure, the HKMA aims to address existing friction in cross-border transactions and wholesale payments, fostering a sustainable ecosystem for digital finance. Investors are encouraged to utilize the HKMA’s official Register of Licensed Stablecoin Issuers to verify credentials and are cautioned to engage only through these authorized, regulated channels to mitigate exposure to fraudulent activities.
