EU Lawmakers Agree on Rules Eliminating 500 Million Tonnes of GHG Emissions

Lawmakers in the European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement on new legislation aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fluorinated gases (F-gases) and ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The proposed legislation is expected to prevent nearly 500 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and contribute to the EU’s climate goals of a 55% emissions reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. The agreement includes phasing out the consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which account for 90% of F-gas emissions, by 2050 and reducing them by 95% by 2030. It also includes a ban on certain products containing HFCs and an export ban on equipment with high global warming potential gases. The new rules will undergo endorsement and formal adoption by the Council and Parliament’s environment committee.
