Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Backs Canadian Carbon Tech Hub with $40M Grant

Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Catalyst has awarded a $40 million grant to Deep Sky, a Canadian startup, to accelerate carbon removal technology through its Direct Air Capture (DAC) testing facility in Alberta. The “Alpha” facility will host eight companies working on DAC solutions, aiming to refine their technologies for commercial-scale deployment. With the first operations set to begin next spring, Deep Sky is adopting a fast-tracked, high-risk approach to speed up carbon capture innovation. This initiative aligns with Canada’s climate goals and seeks to address the critical challenge of removing billions of metric tons of CO₂ annually, as emphasized by U.N. scientists.
