FertigHy Invests €1.3 Billion to Build First Low-Carbon Fertiliser Plant in Northern France

FertigHy, a pan-European producer of low-carbon, nitrogen-based fertilizers, is set to build its first factory in the Hauts-de-France region of Northern France. The €1.3 billion investment will establish an industrial-scale plant that is expected to be operational by 2030. The facility will produce 500,000 metric tons of low-carbon fertilizers annually, which will account for approximately 10% of France’s agricultural sector’s consumption. The project is supported by the French government and is aimed at decarbonizing the agriculture sector, which is responsible for more than 10% of the European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions. The FertigHy factory will create around 250 direct jobs in the region. The production process will utilize renewable and low-carbon electricity to produce hydrogen, serving as a substitute for imported natural gas. FertigHy plans to establish additional large-scale fertilizer factories across Europe, with the support of its founding investors. The project aligns with the European Commission’s objective of transitioning the energy-intensive agriculture sector to low-carbon alternatives produced locally, thereby reducing reliance on mineral nitrogen fertilizers and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the French agricultural sector.
