EU Adopts Rules Requiring All New Buildings to Be Zero Emissions by 2030
The European Council has adopted the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) with new rules to reduce energy use and emissions from buildings in the EU. The directive includes targets for all new buildings to be zero emissions by 2030 and to phase out fossil fuels in building heating systems by 2040. Buildings account for a significant portion of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.
The updated directive requires member states to incorporate the new rules into national legislation within two years. It emphasizes the renovation of low-performing buildings, sets energy performance standards, and supports building renovation plans and schemes to guide owners towards zero-emission buildings. The EPBD aims to create a stronger business case for renovations and advance the transition to a net-zero future.
