India succeeds in reducing emissions rate by 33% over 14 years

India has exceeded expectations with a 33% reduction in greenhouse emissions over 14 years, thanks to increased renewable energy use and expanded forest cover. The report indicates progress towards fulfilling India’s commitment to the UN Convention on Climate Change, aiming for a 45% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030. Emissions intensity dropped by 33% from 2005 to 2019, and from 2016 to 2019, India achieved an annual average reduction of 3%, the fastest recorded so far. The government’s focus on renewables contributed to this success, despite fossil fuels remaining dominant in the energy mix. India showcases a decoupling of economic growth from emissions.
