ADB Approves $1 Billion to Support Low-Carbon Public Transportation in the Philippines

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $1 billion to establish an electric bus fleet for a city-wide public transport project in Davao City, Philippines. This is the first project in the country to deploy electric bus fleets at scale, supporting the Philippines’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and promote climate action. The project is expected to serve as a model for revamping the country’s public road transport system and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60%. Additionally, the project aims to improve the public transport experience through an intelligent transport system, bus stops, terminals, and depots with modern facilities and training for bus drivers. The project includes a social development program to mitigate any adverse impacts and risks related to the restructuring of Davao City’s transport sector. The ASEAN Infrastructure Fund and Green Climate Fund are also providing loans, and technical assistance will be delivered to support project implementation.
